Daly City began honoring African Americans in 1992 with a Juneteenth event at Lincoln Park Community Center, a celebration that marked the beginning of the City’s commemoration of Black History Month. The tradition will continue with a Black History Month Celebration on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Café Doelger (Westlake Park, 101 Lake Merced Blvd., Daly City) from 12 noon to 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

This year’s Black History Month Celebration will feature performances by Young, Gifted & Black, Dimensions Dance Theater, and the San Francisco Jazz All Stars. Isaac Stevenson will serve as the Master of Ceremonies of the event. Soul food will be available from Keith’s Chicken ‘n’ Waffles along with desserts prepared by Daly City’s Garden Deli.

At its January 23, 2017 meeting, the City Council proclaimed February 2017 Black History Month in Daly City. The national theme for Black History Month is The Crisis in Black Education. The proclamation for Black History Month noted that, “African American history is rich in centuries-old efforts of resistance to this crisis (in Black education): the slaves’ surreptitious endeavors to learn; the rise of black colleges and universities after the Civil War; unrelenting battles in the courts; the black history movement; the freedom schools of the1960s; and local community-based academic and mentorship programs that inspire a love of learning and thirst for achievement.”
